Dreams about Skyscrapers

Dreams about skyscrapers represent your lofty goals, that big dream you have. Your dream career, an oceanfront mansion, fame, fortune, reaching great heights of success. These are a few of the things dreams about skyscrapers can represent. Our feelings about the skyscrapers in our dreams and our relationship to them can be very telling of how we feel about the lofty goals we have.

When I was younger, I often dreamed of seeing skyscrapers that were so tall they would go all the way up into the sky far above the clouds. I would look up at them with apprehension and fear. They were so high up, and the highest parts contained offices reserved for the most high-level executives. Although I wanted to reach great heights, my lack of confidence and belief in myself made me fearful. My fear was reflected in my dream self’s fear of going into the skyscraper and riding the elevator up to the highest floors, as if something terrible might happen to the skyscraper, and it would come tumbling down with me inside of it.

Later in life, as I got closer to achieving a certain goal, I dreamed that I was in the city of Philadelphia, the nearest city to me. It has one of the most beautiful skylines, in my opinion, and in this particular dream three of my favorite skyscrapers were clustered closely together. At a certain time of day, water would rise to just below the tops of the skyscrapers. I would go and frolic and play in this water, right alongside the skyscrapers, even climbing on some of them. Sometimes waves would crash around them, as if I were in the ocean. It felt invigorating and was such a joy to experience.

Some people fear success, even though they may want it badly. Sayings such as “It’s lonely at the top”, stories of litigations taken against wealthy individuals and businesses, tales of people losing family and friends in the pursuit of wealth, can strike fear into the hearts of otherwise ambitious people. Therefore our dreams of heights can frighten us, not because we fear falling, but because we fear losing something else we cherish in the process of pursuing our goals. In dreams in which we are at eye level with the heights of the skyscraper, we are comfortable and one with our goals. We revel in their near completion and take great joy in our success and accomplishments.
